As someone who was born and raised in Houston, I’ve seen this city grow and change in amazing ways. Houston is a true melting pot of cultures that offers a wide range of experiences for both residents and tourists. It is often called the most diverse city in the United States. Houston has something for everyone, whether you’re interested in the mysteries of space, want to learn more about other cultures, or want to take a walk along the bayou.
Tip: Uber and Lyft are very accessible, but if you’re looking to go to NASA or Galveston, I would recommend renting a car.
Here are the top 5 things I’d recommend doing in Houston, Texas:
1. NASA’s Space Center Houston (about 35-45 minutes from Downtown)
Space Center Houston is the main visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center. It is one of the best things to do in Houston. This famous space center gives visitors a really good look into the world of space study. Visitors will be amazed by real spaceships and learn about NASA’s past accomplishments. This is an amazing trip that will both entertain and teach and is great for all family members. There is so much to do at NASA, that you’ll want to spend most of the day there!
2. Museum District (about 10 minutes from Downtown)
The Museum District in Houston houses 18 museums and is a cultural treasure that’s only a few miles from downtown. Some of the best museums in the world are there, like the Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Menil Collection. Every museum has something interesting for everyone, whether you’re into art, science, or history or have children and want to go to the Children’s Museum.

3. Houston Zoo (in the Museum District – about 10 minutes from Downtown)
The Houston Zoo is a great place for animal lovers to visit. It is in Hermann Park and is only a short distance from some of Houston’s largest museums. With more than 6,000 animals from all over the world, it’s a fun and interesting spot for people of all ages. You can get up close and personal with many interesting animals at the zoo. You can have fun and learn at the same time, which makes it a must-see site in Houston. The zoo is also right next to Hermann Park, which is a great place to walk around and see the Sam Houston statue. The world-famous largest medical center in the nation is also across the street from the Houston Zoo.

4. Discovery Green Park (in Downtown)
Located in the center of Houston’s downtown, Discovery Green is a busy green space that hosts a wide range of events and activities all year long. It’s a center for entertainment and leisure, offering everything from outdoor concerts and yoga classes to a lovely lake and children’s playground. With its annual calendar of events and art exhibits, the park makes sure there’s always something intriguing going on. Discovery Green is a lively and welcoming getaway in the middle of the city, whether you want to relax in the green area or take part in community events. You’ll also find several bars and restaurants around Discovery Green, such as Biggio, the Rustic and more. You can also walk to East Downtown (Eado) for more bars, such as the Truck Yard or a brewery such as 8th Wonder.
5. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (February-March only)
If you’re in Houston during rodeo season (February to March), you must check out the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. A short drive from downtown, this famous festival is 3 weeks long and is the latest Rodeo in the world. The Houston Rodeo offers rodeo competitions, world-class concerts, a busy fair with rides, and a Texas barbecue that will make your mouth water. The Houston Rodeo offers something for the whole family with plenty to do!
There are many different things to do in Houston, from exploring space and learning about other cultures to going on outdoor adventures and family-friendly trips. These top five spots give you a taste of this Texas city’s lively and varied personality, making sure that your trip is full of unique experiences. I may be biased, but Houston is definitely worth the visit!
