Boise, Idaho, totally surprised me with its charm. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I was mainly there to check out the Big Idaho Potato Hotel, which you can read about here. But let’s talk about Boise – it’s got a mix of culture, history, and some seriously good gluten-free food! Whether you’re into exploring the past, trying new dishes, or just soaking up the local vibe, Boise has something for everyone.
Here are five must-do activities that will make your visit to Boise unforgettable.
1. Treat Yourself to Guru Donuts’ Potato Donut
Kick off your Boise adventure with a unique potato donut at Guru Donuts! I promise it’s a lot better than it sounds. Their famous potato donuts are obviously a nod to Idaho’s potatoes and also a great gluten-free option with plenty of flavors to choose from. From classic cinnamon sugar to savory bacon and cheddar, these donuts are a must-try for any foodie exploring the city. I had two amazing donuts—one classic rainbow sprinkle and the other cinnamon maple, obviously both gluten-free!

2. Indulge in Sweet Delights at The Stil
I promise this whole post isn’t all about food; you can click here for that. Buttttt I had to mention this incredible thing to do after a long day – go to The Stil and order a wine and ice cream flight! This unique ice cream shop offers a rotating menu of handcrafted flavors that pair perfectly with locally sourced wines!
3. Step Back in Time at the Idaho State Penitentiary
One of the more unique things I did in Idaho was go to the Idaho State Penitentiary! This historic site-turned-museum offers insight into the city’s criminal justice system and the lives of its former inmates. Explore the cell blocks and solitary confinement areas, and learn about notable events that shaped Boise’s history. The Old Idaho Penitentiary State Historic Site was a functional prison from 1872 to 1973 and is one of four territorial prisons open to the public today.
4. Wander Through Downtown Boise
Downtown Boise was great and very easy to walk around in. Downtown had so many local stores, art galleries, and cafes. Walking the streets, you’ll find historic signs, murals, and mountains in the distance.

5. Shop local
Another great thing to do in new cities is to support local! Two of my favorite stores in Boise was Edwards Greenhouse and Idaho Made. Both offered such a cute local feel with great items to bring back to friends and family. Edwards Greenhouse is obviously a great house, but they have very unique souvenirs, and it’s fun walking in their plants! Idaho Made is right in downtown and has so many locally sourced items, including stickers, ornaments, towels, etc.
