People from all over the world come to see the Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most famous landmarks. This geothermal spa is located in a lava field in GrindavĂk on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Its beautiful milky blue waters are filled with minerals like sulfur and silica and it was a total dream!
I loved my time at the Blue Lagoon and I ended up staying in the water for almost 2 1/2 hours! Read below for my top tips on why to you should visit the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, what it’s really like and tips to know before you go!
Why Visit the Blue Lagoon?
- Unique Geothermal Waters: The warm, mineral-rich waters of the lake are naturally heated by geothermal energy from the earth, making it a unique place to bathe.
- Health Benefits: The minerals in the water, especially silica, are known to heal the skin. This makes it a great place for people with psoriasis and other skin problems.
- Beautiful Scenery: The dramatic landscape of black lava fields around the Blue Lagoon offers stunning views and great picture opportunities.
- Luxurious Spa Treatments: Besides the lake, people can enjoy a variety of spa treatments, such as massages and facials, making it a great spot to relax and treat yourself.

Tips for Visiting the Blue Lagoon:
- Book ahead of time: Because the Blue Lagoon is so famous, you need to buy your tickets early to make sure you get the time slot you want.
- Pick the Right Time: If you want a more peaceful time, you might want to go early in the morning or late at night. If you go to the lagoon late at night, you can soak under the stars or the midnight sun, based on the time of year.
- Bring your swimsuit (duh): You can rent them there, but bringing your own is easier and cheaper.
- Put your hair up and use the conditioner: Because the water has silica, it could fry your hair. The do have free shampoo and conditioner available!
- Do not wear jewelry: The minerals in the water can damage jewelry, so it is best to leave your jewelry in the lockers or wherever you’re staying.
Tips to Know Before You Go:
The basic ticket comes with 1 drink and 1 face mask. You can upgrade your experience, to include 2 drinks, 2 face masks and a robe. You can also upgrade while in the lagoon, but you will need to get out to pay for it. I did the basic ticket and didn’t feel the need to upgrade.
Since the Blue Lagoon is going through renovations, you will need to park and take a shuttle closer to the building. The shuttle comes every 15 minutes and will drop you up about half a mile to the building. With that said, make sure you wear approval clothes and shoes for the weather! There are lockers you and put all of your stuff in when you’re in the lagoon.
The Blue Lagoon does have two restutanrts that you can go to any time – one a grab and go and the other a sit down restaurant.
With so many volcano eruptioned, make sure you check the Blue Lagoon website before you go to see if it’s open.
